Music is Sensing

When I was a child, my first piano teacher told me that the piano is an instrument to make music. Obviously that is true and will never be false.

Then, I joined the choir and the environment made me understand the deep connection between singing and the piano. When you don't sing out the music, most likely you cannot play the music.

But, yet again, when high-level technical piano works enter the room, you cannot focus solely on the quality of singing. Here is where true technique shines. Hard-core technique, not pretty wrist lame techniques. Think - super duper fast notes without using any part of your body. Your fingers can just do it.

ABRSM disturbs all of us by insisting on the completion of Grade 5 Theory before students may attempt higher-grades. Is ABRSM suggesting that music is just a "live" version of theorical knowledge? And that all things start from scratchhh?

And then, my years of working at Yamaha trained me that music is a language and everything should start from the ear.... solfege! hearing! chords! improvisation! composition! I think I question that even during my first day in Yamaha already....

.

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe I found the golden egg.

Trust me when I say - Music is Sensing.

You sense the presence of a physical sheet music in front of you. You sense when to look at the notes, when to use your ears, when to activate muscle memory, to tone down because you are just an accompaniment, to bring out the right hand, to improvise something because of the right setting, to change the pedal ... to think, to hear, to feel, to...

Well, music . is. a sense!

In maths, you have number sense. In languages - tonal sense. Dance - spacial sense. Cooking - taste sense. Sports - ball sense. Business - money sense. Human interaction - sincerity sense.

Use your senses for music! It's a little like gambling, isn't it. You know your cards, when to use, win or lose...it is just a sense.

Oh and by the way, music is not all about feelings. Feeling is not a sense. Do you get it?!

P.S. DO NOT STEAL MY CONTENT FOR YOUR PHD THESIS USE YOUR MF BRAIN ASSHOLES!
